SIMPLIFYING LIFE AFTER WOR(K)Advice Built Around You, Not a Product
We started The Retirement Studio to do financial planning differently: clear guidance, real relationships, and a fiduciary standard that puts your goals first.
THE FOUNDER STORYHow The Retirement Studio Started
A partnership
10 years
in the making
Ten years ago, Brian Boswell was managing a 401(k) plan when a regional ADP wholesaler kept showing up with better questions than anyone else in the room. That was Brandon Barber. But it wasn't the professional side that changed things. Around that same time, Brandon and his wife were in the middle of fostering, and eventually adopting, their son. Brian watched it happen in real time, the uncertainty, the waiting, the sheer commitment it took, and it told him everything he needed to know about who Brandon was. Keep your word. Show up, especially when it's hard. Lead with honesty, even when it costs you something. They didn't just work the same way. They believed the same things.
A decade later, when Brian moved to Savvy, Brandon was ready for a change of his own, more room for his family, a real shot at building something that was his. Brian needed a partner he could trust completely. There was no version of that decision where he considered anyone but Brandon. Eighteen months in, Brian still calls it the most exciting stretch of his career, not because the work got easier, but because he gets to do it alongside someone who shows up the same way, every time.
OUR PHILOSOPHYPlanning First. Investing With Purpose.
Too many financial relationships start with a product. Ours starts with a plan. Before we ever talk about investments, we take the time to understand your goals, your family, and what a secure future actually looks like for you. As a fee-only fiduciary firm, we're legally required to act in your best interest at all times, not just recommend what's "suitable." That means every strategy we build, from tax planning to estate planning to portfolio construction, is designed around your life first. It's a simple standard, but it's one a surprising number of firms don't actually meet.
Who We Work With
We work with people navigating real, specific moments, not just generic financial goals. Here's who we help most often, and how.
Ultra High Net Worth Families
Complex, multi-generational wealth requires more than a standard plan. Our advisors bring specialized experience in estate strategy, tax coordination, and investment management.
Read Story →Client Profile: Richard & Diane
Richard and Diane built substantial net worth through forty years of steady corporate careers, disciplined saving, and smart real estate choices. Yet upon entering retirement, their primary concern had nothing to do with portfolio returns. They wanted to answer a far more important question: how do we ensure this wealth lasts beyond us while supporting our family fairly?
With three adult children in vastly different financial situations, a successful attorney, a teacher raising a family on a modest income, and a 28-year-old still finding his footing, they needed an intentional legacy plan that was fair without forcing an identical, rigid split.
We stepped in to help Richard and Diane design an integrated estate and legacy strategy:
- Customized Trust & Estate Alignment: Restructured their trust framework to account for each child’s unique life circumstances while protecting family harmony.
- Gifting & Education Planning: Implemented a strategic annual gifting program to leverage current federal exemptions before sunset provisions take effect, and funded 529 college savings plans for all five grandchildren.
- Philanthropic & Legacy Structuring: Established a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) for annual charitable contributions, creating a generational bridge for their children to eventually take over grantmaking decisions.
The Approach
We executed a multi-generational estate blueprint combining customized trusts, lifetime gifting, and structured philanthropy. To ensure complete alignment, we facilitated an open family meeting where Richard and Diane shared their vision and intentions directly with their children. Today, the entire family operates with absolute clarity and confidence around the family legacy.
Client Profile: Mark & Sarah
Accumulating $1.2 million in Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stock felt like an extraordinary financial win for Mark and Sarah. Yet as the position grew to represent over 25% of their net worth, the anxiety of holding a deeply concentrated equity position began to build. Between an embedded gain of over $1 million and a single-year federal tax bill estimated at $242,760 upon liquidation, Mark felt trapped between two risky options: sell and pay a massive tax check, or hold and let one semiconductor ticker set their retirement date.
Our team stepped in to evaluate their complete balance sheet, moving beyond all-or-nothing choices to construct an actionable equity blueprint:
- Staged Tax Realization & Vesting Alignment: Designed a multi-year realization plan to spread capital gains across multiple tax years while selling newly vesting RSUs first to minimize new capital gains taxes.
- Downside Risk & Concentration Management: Quantified their portfolio's vulnerability to market drawdowns, mapping out structured hedging and donor-advised fund gifting strategies to reduce position density.
- Systematic Diversification Schedule: Built a sequenced liquidation schedule tied to Mark’s ongoing vesting dates, coordinating tax-loss harvesting to offset realized gains while honoring company pre-clearance rules.
The Approach
We implemented a staged realization and risk-mitigation framework paired with ongoing quarterly equity reviews aligned around Mark’s trading windows. Today, Mark and Sarah have total clarity, knowing their AMD wealth is systematically protected and working toward their long-term retirement timeline without incurring unnecessary tax drag.
Client Profile: Marco & Elena
Marco built his staffing company from a spare bedroom into a thriving business with 45 employees. Yet after twelve years of reinvesting every dollar back into operations, he and Elena had almost nothing saved in their own names. Elena frequently asked a critical question: what happens to our family if something happens to the company?
We stepped in to help Marco and Elena separate their business from their personal financial life, building a resilient plan that protects both:
- Personal Wealth & Tax Strategy: Restructured Marco’s owner compensation for maximum tax efficiency, established a SEP IRA, and initiated systematic transfers into a diversified personal portfolio.
- Risk Mitigation & Legal Audit: Identified a major vulnerability in the business structure, noting the total absence of a buy-sell agreement or formal succession plan.
- Succession Planning: Coordinated directly with Marco’s corporate attorney to execute a buy-sell agreement and modeled clear exit pathways, including private equity sales, key employee transitions, and internal leadership handoffs.
The Approach
We implemented a dual-balance-sheet framework that separated company cash flow from personal wealth building while coordinating legal succession planning across their advisory team. Today, Marco and Elena have absolute clarity, knowing their financial future no longer rests entirely on a single business enterprise.
